Der Schermesserfisch (Xyrichtys novacula) gehört zur Familie der Lippfische (Labridae). Er lebt über sandigem Grund oder Weichböden sowie Seegraswiesen. Wenn er sich bedroht fühlt, gräbt sich vollständig ein. Das Verbreitungsgebiet des ca. 30 cm langen Fischs erstreckt sich vom tropischen Westatlantik bis zum Ostatlantik bis nach Westafrika und ins Mittelmeer.
