Cannons of HMS Thunderer

These two cannons were recovered in 1984 by the research vessel Beacon. They came from the 200 year old 74 gun ship HMS Thunderer that disappeared on October 16, 1780 during a hurricane. All 617 lives were lost. Among the lost sailors were Midshipman Nathaniel Cook (1764-1780), the second child of Captain James Cook. The cannons were brought to Cayman by Mr. Humphries (Herbo) owner of the Holiday Inn at the time. They were purchased by the Tortuga Rum Company Ltd. from the Maritime and Sunken Treasure Museum in Cayman. The remains of the wreck are located on the Formigas Banks approximately 90 miles from the Eastern tip of Jamaica.
